In comparison with the past, free flight aeromodelling on the Wasserkuppe is somewhat restricted. Some hundred meters down woods emerged from the grassland.
Retrieving can be quite difficult if the models drift to the East or West or fly long distances when the wind is low. Though, South and Southsouthwest are still usable directions.

But an international championship can not rely on the hope to get the right wind direction on a defined day. Therefore the organiser searched for slopes being suitable for westerly, easterly and northerly winds.
In the area around the village Kaltensundheim shallow slopes had been used for quit a while by RC modellers and they proved to be ideal for F1E.
2007 the German Nationals in F1E took place on the Leichelberg near Kaltensundheim, which may be soared even with crosswind. 33 free flight modellers were rewarded with a championship which was assessed as being the “best ever”.

The Leichelberg slopes are shallow
In practice, the Leichelberg provides further advantages. In case of weather with low clouds, the sight on the 950 m high Wasserkuppe is almost zero. The Leichelberg and its neighboured hills have a height of just 600 m and offer flyable conditions even when the Wasserkuppe is covered in mist.
Except of autumn disadvantages are the landing areas. Launched from grassland free flight models regularly have to land on fields. Therefore competitions dates are to be scheduled when these fields are harvested. But September offers the best conditions anyhow in this part of Germany.
The weather is used to being stable and nice, with temperatures between 14° and 24° C and winds between 2 and 6 m/sec, mainly from West and South. - Depending on the prevailing wind direction the slopes will be assessed the day before any competition. [www.windfinder.com/forecast/wasserkuppe ]
