After WW II, American troops transformed the 950 m hill to a watchtower in order to observe military activities behind the Iron Curtain a few kilometres away. Buildings on the top were fenced.

1994 the fourth and last radar station had been built, but nowadays its dome is empty. The fences are re-laid, a youth hostel with 200 beds moved into the former barracks.

Sailplanes use a long airfield east of the slopes, and model flyers share the wonderful slopes with hang glider and paraglider pilots. An attractive museum – biggest of its kind – had been built containing a huge collection of reconstructed sailplanes and of all kind of model aircraft [www.segelflugmuseum.de].
